How a private caregiver can benefit a client with dementia and/or Alzheimer’s disease.

Personalized private care includes a wide range of services provided in the home, rather than in a hospital or care community. It can allow a person with Alzheimer’s or dementia to stay in the comfort of their own home where sights, sounds, personal belongings are comforting and familiar. This personalized care at home can be of life-altering benefits to the person with dementia and can also be of great assistance to family caregivers. Family members can quickly be overwhelmed with the increasing needs of the client.

Not all in-home services are created equal. Some in-home services provide non-medical help, such as assistance with activities of daily living. Other in-home services involve medical care given by a licensed nurse such a wound care, assessments and medication administration.

Often with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, “home” is the place that is forgotten last. Home, where there are memories, personal items, physical comforts, familiar sights and smells, brings the most comfort physically and brings the most emotional feeling of happiness and calm. To anyone with cognitive impairment, change to what is familiar, whether it be surroundings or their daily routine, can be catastrophic.

When one is diagnosed with dementia or Alzheimer’s, establishing a daily routine and keeping surroundings stable is most beneficial. Family caregivers such as spouses or adult children, can frequently become fatigued as the disease of their loved one progresses. There are many benefits to keeping a dementia patient at home with assistance:

  1. Staying in their own home aids in the dementia patient being calmer with a greater sense of happiness and peace
  2. A professional caregiver can provide the spouse and/or children a much-needed respite by allowing them time away from the individual diagnosed so they can resume their own self- care such as community outings, time with friends and other family, work opportunities, attending religious services etc.
  3. Professional personal assistance in the home allows for a caregiver to prepare well-balanced meals and assist with encouraging proper nutrition and hydration for the client
  4. Home care professionals are the solution to the constant monitoring and care required of dementia patients. Memory care providers are experienced in managing the myriads of symptoms caused by Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia and are invaluable in the daily life of seniors.
  5. Professional memory care providers are trained and experienced and can identify symptoms associated with dementia and alleviate discomfort. Qualified dementia caregivers are integral to the management of dementia care at home and, therefore, beneficial to families
  6. Professional caregivers support dementia patients with hygiene tasks, such as bathroom use and dressing. Light housekeeping is performed to keep the home clean and hygienic.
  7. Professional caregivers do provide timely medication reminders to ensure medication compliance. Maintaining the proper dose and frequency of medication is crucial to the health and well-being of the dementia patient. Proper and timely medication routines reduce the risk of emergent medical needs, hospitalizations and infections.

This list of benefits of professional assistance at home for the dementia patient is not exhaustive but covers much of the leading areas of need.
